Somewhere inside your organization right now, someone brilliant has built an AI tool over a long weekend. It scrapes competitive intel. It summarizes trends. It pipes recommendations into a Slack channel every morning. And it works. Kind of.
“Kind of” is the problem.
Because that tool lives on one person’s laptop, serves one person’s workflow, and falls apart the moment that person goes on PTO. It doesn’t talk to your survey data. It doesn’t know your strategy doc exists. And it definitely doesn’t know that someone three desks over already answered the exact question it’s trying to solve—six months ago, on a different platform, in a deck no one can find.
This is the build-versus-buy tension that’s playing out on every insights, analytics, and strategy team at scale right now. And it’s worth being honest about what’s actually at stake.
The Vibe-Coding Trap
We’re living in the era of vibe coding. Anyone with a weekend and an API key can spin up something functional. One research leader told us recently: “I’ve built an AI tool that researches trends and gives actionable recommendations. But it’s not super user-friendly.” That’s refreshingly honest—and it’s the story we hear over and over.
The prototype works for the person who built it. It does not work for their team. It does not scale to the organization. And it absolutely does not close the gap between “here’s an interesting signal” and “here’s what we’re going to do about it, and here’s the evidence to defend that decision in every room that matters.”
Here’s what’s gotten commoditized: features. You can build a MaxDiff. You can build a trend aggregator. You can build a survey bot. Having the feature is no longer the differentiator. What hasn’t been commoditized is the connective layer—the thing that links what’s happening in the market to what your organization already knows to the decision someone actually needs to make on Tuesday.
That’s not a feature. That’s an architecture. And you’re not going to vibe-code it into existence.
Tool Sprawl Is Costing You More Than You Think
Ask any enterprise team how many tools they use and the answer is always some version of “too many.” That’s not inherently a problem—complex organizations need specialized capabilities. The problem is when every tool exists in isolation.

You need personalization that adapts to each user’s role and objectives—so a researcher gets survey design recommendations while a VP of strategy gets competitive positioning guidance from the same underlying data.
You need a permissions model. You need methodology intelligence built on years of knowing what actually works in research design, not just what’s technically possible. You need the output layer—branded narratives for your CMO, briefs for your brand manager, models for your finance team—all generated from one unified set of evidence instead of cobbled together from five different exports.
And here’s the hard wall that no DIY stack gets past: primary research. ChatGPT synthesizes what’s already public. It cannot field a survey. It cannot run a concept test. It cannot collect the voice of the consumer. When your team identifies a trend worth investigating and needs real validation from real people, the homegrown stack has nothing to offer. That’s not a gap you patch with another API key.
But let’s say you build it anyway. Now you have to maintain it. And this is the part nobody accounts for on day one. The model provider releases a new version and your carefully tuned prompts break overnight. Your API hits a rate limit during the week your CMO needs the competitive brief. The underlying AI changes how it handles context windows and suddenly your tool returns hallucinated nonsense on queries that worked fine last month. Every one of these failures requires someone’s time and attention—and that someone is usually the same person who was supposed to be doing actual strategic work.
Then there’s the layer most teams don’t think about until it’s too late: IT and security. At any enterprise with real data governance, getting an internal AI tool approved isn’t a weekend project—it’s a procurement and compliance gauntlet. Where is the data stored? Which model provider is processing it? Does it meet your organization’s security requirements? Can it handle PII? Most homegrown tools are built on whatever AI the builder had personal access to, which is rarely the most capable or most secure option available. You end up with a tool that’s simultaneously unapproved by IT and underpowered compared to what a purpose-built platform can offer.
Can your organization build this? Probably. If you’re a Fortune 500 company, you could build your own version of almost any software product on the market. You could build TikTok. You could build a version of Salesforce. But you’d be hard-pressed to try, because that’s not what you’re best at. The opportunity cost of diverting engineering and data science talent toward rebuilding research infrastructure is almost always higher than the cost of buying it, and it comes without the decade of domain expertise baked into how the system thinks.
Speed Isn’t the Point. Confidence Is.
Here’s where the build-versus-buy conversation usually goes sideways. Teams frame the value of AI tools in terms of speed: faster research, faster decks, faster turnaround. Speed matters. But speed alone isn’t the primary pain—confidence is. A fast answer you can’t defend in a budget review isn’t faster. It’s wasted.
AI skeptics love pointing to the last-mile problem. And they’re not wrong—most AI tools get you somewhere between half and two-thirds of the way to a finished deliverable, and the remaining manual effort eats the efficiency gains for breakfast.
One researcher we talked to said they expect AI to get them “about 50 percent” of the way to a final output. That’s the baseline. That’s what general-purpose tools deliver. When a purpose-built platform pushes that to 80 or 85 percent, the reaction changes: “That’s really good. Usually there’s a lot of extra work between the output and the final version.”
The gap between 50% and 80% doesn’t sound dramatic. It is. At 50%, AI is a novelty—a faster rough draft you’d never walk into a boardroom with. At 80%, AI is producing something defensible. Your review layer shifts from assembly and formatting to judgment and nuance. And the output isn’t just faster—it’s something you can actually put in front of your CMO, your finance lead, and your board without flinching.
And this is exactly where purpose-built platforms separate from the DIY stack. A generic AI assistant can draft a survey. That’s a fundamentally different challenge than “we need more data” or “we need faster data.”
For the past decade, research platforms served a specific person: the one who designs and fields surveys. Critical work—but a fraction of the decision-making chain. When the platform evolves from research tool to decision engine, the value extends to everyone who touches the insight. The analyst who spots the signal. The strategist who contextualizes it. The executive who needs three sentences and a recommendation to greenlight a budget.
That’s also what makes the build-versus-buy math so clearly favor buying. You’re not purchasing a survey tool. You’re purchasing the connective layer between what’s happening in the market, what your organization already knows, and what needs to happen next. Building that from scratch means rebuilding not just the technology, but the years of domain expertise embedded in how the system thinks about research design, signal credibility, and strategic recommendation.
The brands that win the next era of this industry won’t be the ones with the most tools or the cleverest internal hacks. They’ll be the ones who eliminated the space between learning something and acting on it—with the confidence to make the bet and the evidence to defend it in every room that matters.
